An apparatus for determining the permeability of paint films towards chloride ion is described. This set-up implements the time-lag method and consists of a permeation cell made up of two chambers divided by a supported paint film. The upper chamber contains an aqueous sodium chloride solution and the lower one, water. The permeability is obtained from the conductivity history read at the lower chamber. Osmotic pressure issue is addressed and the reproducibility of the results reported. The time-lag method is not described in any standard. The requirement concerning “surface protection systems for concrete” for chloride ion permeability is not quantified in prEN 1504-2. The standard establishes that this requirement is “subject to national standards and national regulations” but when the capillary adsorption of water is lower than 0.01 kg/(m2h0.5) the diffusion of chloride ion is not to be expected. Some experimental results prove this is not correct and, in Portugal, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) has proposed a threshold permeability value of 10–14 m2/sec for coatings claiming to be corrosion protective.

The Effect of Chloride Ions Concentration on the Electrochemical Behavior of AISI 410 Stainless Steels in Simulated Concrete Pore Solution

The effect of chloride ions concentration on the electrochemical behavior of AISI 410 stainless steel in the simulated concrete pore (0.1 M NaOH + 0.1 M KOH) solution was investigated by various electrochemical methods such as Potentiodynamic polarization, Mott–Schottky analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed that increasing chlori...

Effect of Sand Replacement and Silica Fume Addition on Chloride Ion Permeability of Lightweight Concrete

This paper was conducted to study the behavior of lightweight concrete, incorporating local lightweight aggregate (LWA), in terms of chloride ion permeability at different ages. The effect of lightweight fine aggregate replacement by normal weight sand (0, 25, 50 and 75% by volume) was investigated. Constant level of silica fume content (10% by weight of cement) as an addition was also consider...

Center for By-Products Utilization RESISTANCE OF HIGH-QUALITY CONCRETE (HQC) TO CHLORIDE ION PENETRATION

A research program was carried out to evaluate the chloride ion permeability of both air and non-air entrained concretes made with mineral admixtures as partial replacements of cement. Two series of investigations (Series 1 and Series 2) were carried out. The mixtures were proportioned to have 28-day strengths of 35 MPa for Series 1 and 69 MPa for Series 2. Chloride ion permeability was determi...

Preparation and Characterization of Novel Bionanocomposite Based on Tapioca Starch/Gelatin/Nanorod-rich ZnO: Towards Finding Antimicrobial Coating for Nuts

The effects of zinc oxide nanorod on the barrier, sorption isotherm and antibacterial properties of tapioca starch/bovine gelatin Bionanocomposite films were investigated. The nanorod-rich ZnO (ZnO-N) was homogenized by sonication and incorporated into tapioca starch/bovine gelatin solutions at different concentrations (e.g. 0.5, 2, and 3.5% w/w dried solid). Incorporation of 3.5% of nanopartic...

Characterization of a sulfonated pentablock copolymer for desalination applications

Water and salt transport properties were determined in a family of sulfonated pentablock copolymers to characterize their potential as chlorine-tolerant desalination membrane materials. The degree of sulfonation, block molecular weight, and casting conditions can be independently varied to tune the transport properties of these materials. Data for water uptake, water permeability, salt permeabi...
